Failure Is The Successful Internet Entrepreneur's Greatest Ally
If you haven't failed yet at running your Internet business, then you are not trying hard enough. To be successful, you have to take some calculated risks. You have to push your limits and be willing to try new and creative things because not trying is really just another form of failure.
So, if you have a few fails under your belt already, then let me wish you a hearty, congratulations! You had the courage to attempt something that 99% of people won't do because they couldn't even manage to screw up the courage to take the first step.
However, there is a trap in failure that you must be careful to avoid. When failure hits, it is so very easy to tell ourselves that it was dumb to even try. It's easy to start beating up on yourself and telling yourself that all the nay-sayers were right. It was a foolish venture and you should have known better.
This negative self-talk can break your back in an instant. You have to be ever vigilant because self-blame will sneak in and destroy your confidence.
However, on the other hand, if you remain vigilant and counter the negativity with a mindset of curiosity and a willingness to learn, then you instantly change your destiny. Failure hurts, but it is an opportunity to look back, re-evaluate what you did and find the flaw. What did you miss? What did you do too much of or too little of and what could you do different?
The willingness to review your process and strategy will change your entire outlook. Your internal dialog can be your greatest ally and support system, if you are vigilant. Of you are a victim to the easy route of negative self-talk and the criticism of others, then you might as well give up right now.
Why? Because running an online business is hard and lonely and it takes real courage to work massively long hours, be creative, be willing to fail and learn, and to keep plugging away day after day.
If you are driven to succeed as an entrepreneur then you must be willing to give the cold shoulder to the grief you feel upon failure. Listen to the negativity and you won't get back up when you fall down. It's just like riding a bicycle except we are older now and bumps in the road hurt more and seem even more scary.
However, if you view failure as only a stepping stone toward success, then you will succeed. Someday, somehow. Every person that has met with success has conquered the demons of failure. They know that failure is not the end of the story. It is the teacher that shows you what not to do again and drives you to find a new way that will work.
So, what can active do when you have a failure? After all, it's all good to talk about being positive, but what can you actually DO to get back on the path to success?
If today, you are conquering the mental demons of failure then, shake yourself off and go do something different for a few hours. Get out, get away from the computer or the phone. Go get a coffee, talk with friends, people watch at a café or mall, and change your environment.
Or, if you just can't get away from your office at the moment, take a few minutes to write an article about failing. Hmmmm.... This might just be what I am doing right now. You would be amazed at how much more courageous I am feeling right now!
Tweet about what is happening for you. Post a status on Facebook. Be real to people and you might just be surprised at how they will support you. After all, every single one of the people you touch have hit bumps in the road too. You actually make them feel better about themselves by being a real person yourself, warts and all.
Next, when you have experienced some catharsis by getting out your disappointment and frustration, go back to your plan and go over the hundreds of details necessary to successfully running an Internet business. Give your self a pat on the back for even knowing half of them. Then look at the rest and figure out what more you need to learn or what you can do differently next.
Failure is your best ally. It doesn't mean that the door to success is closed permanently. It just means that one path didn't work and you need to go back to the drawing board and figure out a new way of doing things.
Keep you eye on the goal, your successful Internet business. Any result that is not a complete success helps you immensely. It teaches you patience and points you toward the correct path to success.
